Artistic Inspiration: The Secret of Kells

The Secret of Kells is one of the best animated movies of all time. It's a fairly new movie, about a year old now. The art direction was taken from the artwork from the Book of Kells. The characters, environments, textures, are all visual eye candy. After watching this film with my wife at the local art house theater, I went home and started imitating this art style. I'd been exposed to illumination before, and I've always been a lover of Medieval religious paintings, but this cartoon really helped be see that the older styles of art could still be used in a modern way. The illustrations that I did for my graduate thesis were indirectly influenced by this movie.
