Free Comic Book Day Postmortem

A huge thank you to Punk Monkey Comics who put together a great artist room at free comic book day. Rachel and I had a blast hanging out with all the artists, meeting new people, and drawing lots of free sketches. FCD was wicked fun. Can't wait for the next time we participate in free comic book day.

I think Rachel and I cranked out some fun drawings today. We probably drew more Darth Vaders than we ever have in our lives. I thought I'd share a few quick snapshots of a few of the sketches we did today.

NC Comic Con Aftermath

Well, the 2013 NC Comic Con has come and gone. A big thank you to everyone who stopped by our table to chat and to those of you who purchased our comics and artwork. We had a great time visiting the city of Durham for the first time ever. We were amazed at the number of people that attended the show. Can't wait until the next time we visit North Carolina.

Rachel and I ate the most amazing Chicken and Waffles after Saturday's show. I decided to take a picture of the happy wife enjoying her meal, when I suddenly realized that right behind her were Geoff Darrow and Frank Cho sitting at the bar.

We had a little laugh about being so close to artistic greatness. I talked with Geoff at the show earlier in the day, but I got the impression he was in a bit of a grumpy mood, so I decided not to accost him at the bar. By the way, the chicken and waffles were the best meal ever.

We were set up next to artist Doug Cowan! I've loved his artwork for a while without knowing who he was. He was really fun to talk to and he kindly traded a print of Wicket for a drawing of a Gijoe Laser Viper.

He inspired me to do my own ewok drawing.

We also set up next to author Pab Sungenis, who kept himself busy during the con by drawing "The World's Crapiest Drawings". He kept me and Rachel entertained throughout the entire weekend.

Cola Con 2013 Aftermath

We had a great time at Cola Con! A big thank you to everyone who bought comics, prints, and original artwork from us. The con was small, but we met a lot of awesome people. Our table mate Sam Spina took this photo of our table for us...We bought one of his books and read it this afternoon. Fun Stuff. More pics of artwork from the con to come.

Check out our Pretty Weird Art Page to see some sketches from the Con: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pretty-Weird-Art/120074491366900

Inks for Skull Gun Bunny Web Comic, Issue 2 + Update on Projects

Inks for the cover of Issue 2 of Skull Gun Bunny. In case anyone is wondering, I've plotted out the initial story arch for the comic, which will last 10 issues. I'm going to be rotating my time between this comic and Death Elf and Woose, which will incidentally also have a 10 issue arch. Once I finish an issue of SGB, I'll put out an issue of DE&W, and vice versa so that I don't get burned out working only one book.

Heroes Con 2013: Post Mortem

Heroes Con was just this last week. I was able to attend with my beautiful wife Rachel Mongin, an awesome writer friend of mine Mark Szaz, and with a bunch of other uber talented artists. We all had a blast.
I thought that I'd share some of the commission sketches and a few other pictures from the event.

A huge shootout to everyone who stopped by our Pretty Weird booth and spoke to us. It was great to talk to some many people who loved the comic medium. Thank you so much for your kind words and for your support of the arts.

For those of you who contributed to the "Idea Box", I'll be posting a tab on this website and our prettyweirdart.blogspot.com site with a status report on the project. I'll update the pages as the project continues to evolve. We had well over 80 people contribute their ideas to the project, and some of the ideas are incredibly entertaining. We even enjoyed the guy's who contributed drawings of large phallic symbols. We know your hearts were in the right place...

Anyways, you don't want to read me babbling, let's get on with the pics from the show!

This was an awesome commission! The guy who asked me to draw this Joe handed me his own sketchbook that held sketches by the original artists that worked on the Gijoe comics in the 80's!

Here's the artwork to prove it! My cartoon Joe is in the same book as Ron's version of the Joe! My artwork is just pages away from the guy who drew the Joe Comics in the 80's! Geekgasm!

Death Elf and Woose in Print

We got our test print of our comic in the mail today! Rachel and I ran into the house like little screaming kids on Christmas morning and flipped through it to see how the artwork turned out. Everything's good to go and we will have a limited run of the 28 page comic for sale at HeroesCon in June.

Pretty Weird Launches

My wife and I are starting our own company named "Pretty Weird". We will be printing our own comics and producing other pieces of art under the name. We're planning on hitting the comic book convention circuit this year as well as some indie art shows and fairs across the country. My wife and I put the logo together this last week and I'll be putting the blog and website together over the next week or two. I'll post an official launch once we've got our site together and I'll also post the locations that we'll be showing our work.

Free Comic Book Day 2013

Just made plans with the local comic book store to participate in free comic book day. Anyone in the Columbia, SC area on the 1st Saturday of May can stop by Heroes and Dragons and get free comic sketches from me and my wife. We're also hoping to have our new business "Pretty Weird" up and running by then, so we should have some awesome artwork and promos for sale.

HeroesCon 2013

My wife and I will be showing our comics and artwork at Charlotte's HeroesCon this year. From June 6-9, you'll be able to meet us in person and see the visual insanity that's been bouncing around in our heads for the last year.

Scoop It Joe Posting

It's really interesting to study the result of that comics alliance posting of my artwork the other week.
Since the initial posting, I've been studying the web to see what kind of web traffic the post would produce. It's interesting. The day of the posting, I only found the ComicsAlliance post. I'm now finding more and more sites that reposted the information that the ComicsAlliance posted with the same date or a day after the initial write-up. What I find odd is that I couldn't find these same day posts before. They didn't come up on the day the web says they were posted. I'm sure there's some sort of computer rigmaroll that I'm not aware of, just thought that was something of an enigma.

More Shameless Promotion

So I've seen another site that posted links to my Joes...Happy Happy Joy Joy.

I've decided that I'm going to celebrate by working on some more industrious Joe work to celebrate.
I'm going to work on a few of the sub teams and maybe even do some of the more popular Joes in the near future. So far I've been drawing the Joes I liked as action figures, as opposed to drawing the characters generally considered to be the most popular.

The Orange Co. Posts GiJoe

My Joes were featured by The Orange Co. website the other day. Seeing my stuff on that site made me giddy. It's not every day that a really cool artsy website takes the time to post your labor of love. Thanks guys, I really appreciate your making my day a zillion times brighter and better!

p.s. If you've not checked out The Orange yet, you should. They feature a lot of creative stuff. A lot of artists that I've found on Deviant Art end up in their art posts.

More love for GiJoe

More people are blogging about my Gijoe artwork! It's exciting to see people out there appreciate my special brand of odd-ball artwork! This time it's the Crooked Ninja that's talking about my stuff.

Also I4U has done a small blurb about my work

And the Fortress of Nerditude blog by Marvin Moore has also shown some love for my Joes

Lauren Davis of Comics Alliance did a really nice write up about my artwork the other day. It was really awesome and flattering to see my Gijoe artwork get some loving...

Alice in Wonderland, Oliver Twist, and Treasure Island Artwork Featured on Behance

I've posted some of the primordial artwork associated with my thesis on the Behance Network. I received an email today that my submission is now one of the featured illustrators on Behance's new illustration webpage. Thanks Behance! Maybe once I post my final thesis work, I'll be featured again. Fingers crossed.
